Addressing the ESG talent gap with Sustainable Finance Skillnet

For over 75 years, Irish Life Investment Managers (ILIM) has been working with a wide range of institutional clients including insurance companies, wealth managers, pension schemes, fiduciary managers and sovereign wealth funds across Europe and North America.

ILIM is at the forefront of the sustainable finance agenda in Ireland, however, when determining a roadmap to addressing the social and governance (ESG) talent needs within the business, ILIM faced two distinct challenges; building employees' understanding and support for the initiative and scaling challenges.

To overcome these obstacles, ILIM partnered with Sustainable Finance Skillnet to develop the first industry focussed framework of talent development around responsible investing, capable of identifying and sponsoring the development of programmes designed to equip staff across the business with knowledge of ESG and sustainable finance.

Sustainable Finance Skillnet's mission is to nurture sustainability the within financial services sector, by embedding sustainable approaches within firms through the delivery of specialised upskilling aimed at business leaders and employees.

To-date, the collaboration between the Skillnet Business Network and ILIM has resulted in the roll-out of three bespoke programmes in sustainable finance and responsible investing. Initially focusing on upskilling specialist expertise within the fund management and distribution teams in 2019, programmes were extended to the wider employee base of over 200 people in 2020, and most recently to ILIM’s wide network of partners and external stakeholders.
